French Bee Skeps…a give away

Aug 2, 2011

Since ancient times, bees have been kept for their honey.  Honey was originally collected from the bees’ nest in hollow trees. To make collecting the honey much easier artificial nests for the honey bees to live in were made.  Before wooden hives came into use, European and British beekeepers used inverted straw or wicker baskets called a “skep”. Skeps are baskets placed open end down with a small hole at the bottom for the bees to enter.  They are the earliest and most simple form of the bee hive.   The skeps were weatherproofed with a thatch or mixture similar to that used on house walls.  It is rare to find an original old woven bee skep because most were destroyed when the honey was removed.  Recently, the interest in skep making has increased and their use has expanded into home and garden applications.

We love all of applications for  bee skeps used in the home and garden.  Bee skeps are being used as garden accessories, in interior vignettes and as pedant lighting indoors and out.

I LOVE your website and am a new follower. I am in the process of having drawings done on a new home.
Am so excited I found this site for some inspiration. I love the idea of the skeps in the kitchen on a huge wood block island
sitting beside my wood and glass bowls of fresh berries, apples, and nuts. And maybe a glass honey pot with a wooden
honey spoon. Makes me smile thinking about it!

  11. I have loved bee skeps for many years, but have never actually seen one in person. I would love to keep one out in the garden during the sunny months and then use it inside for it’s wonderful texture and patina during the colder months of the year.

  12. I am a happy follower of your blog. I found you through the blog Greige and was hooked on your wonderful style immediatly!

  16. I have never seen these before or if I did I did not know what they were. So I do not know how I would use them if I won. But I love the look and now the meaning of them. I think I would display them like the photo of the bee keeper skep with the saint statue. Thank you for the chance to win something beautiful from your shop. I love your blog…and shop! ox

  17. I will add a link to your giveaway on my blog sidebar. ox

I have always wanted to have a bee skep for my garden but they are quite difficult to find. Sooooooo I am thrilled to have found your blog and your shop!

  21. Glynis

Hi there, I’m a new follower and love your blog and styling ideas etc. When I saw these bee skeps (I didn’t know that was what they were called by the way) I knew I had to leave a comment – as I found two bees crawling on my bedroom carpet when I came home this evening. I set them both free back into the outdoors – but what a spooky coincidence to have that happen and then see these beautiful structures.

If I was lucky enough to win them – although I’m overseas and that may exclude me from the giveaway :( – I would love to have them as a decorative item in the home as they are so lovely.

  22. As an avid gardener, I’d want to use it outdoors. Love the French version.
    Karen

  23. Lois

Love your blog and the bee skeps!! Thanks for letting me know what they were…had no idea, but loved them! I love them in the garden or just sitting on a table!

  24. Atelier de Campagne

I have seen many different types of skeps…and we bought one which is covered with some type of substance like mud.

It’s in our warehouse in Belgium and Johan has not sent it because he thinks it might create issues with customs. It’s lovely!

He uses it as a prop here and there with his vignettes. I don’t think he fears anything, I think he just wants to keep it! He is sly

that way, but we love him and he does so much, we pretend we believe him.

    Greetings my belles!

    Trinidad

  25. Meg and I love your blog and are already followers!! Our favorite skep is the last image. You all seem to always post such beautiful and inspiring pictures. We hope you can check out our blog too…http://pchateau.blogspot.com ….

  28. Sallie

I have always have a love of bee skeps, but I have never seen a bee skep light. How wonderful that would be in a potting room or sunroom a garden room–assuming I had any of those. This would be a most wonderful start!

  29. Sallie

My goodness! My comment needs proofreading! Please correct my mistakes.

I have recently found your blog when it was highlighted on another blog…I can’t wait for each new posting. I have seen these bee keeps in pictures but had no idea of what they were – thanks for another idea! I love the use of the skep as a light over the chair. If I had one I would use it in a grouping on a marble topped table in my family room.

  31. CC

I love these!!!!! I would display mine in a similar fashion as the picture above with it nestled near a statue. I’ve got the perfect spot….Just sayin’ Tee hee

  32. Mary

I love the bee skeps but especially as pendants over bar or table.

  33. I love the rustic country look of bee skeps, just as part of a vignette or garden decor. I really enjoy your blog.

  34. I love the lighting fixtures–unique and the light is so warm and soft. Mary

  35. I am a new follower (for a week or so) and love all the beautiful images you post. They always remind me of growing up in the south with the live oaks and of course Spanish moss! I get so much inspiration here. I love the way the skeps look on a tablescape or on the floor. Of course, if mine were on the floor they would soon be filled with action figures from my boys so does “action figure hideout” count as a creative use?

  36. I started following you fairly recently, and am delighted to have found you…bee skeps, how romantic they are…I have one I actually found in a thrift store, but nowhere as nice as yours. I move mine all around in the garden to highlight plants that are looking especially good, move it into the house to decorate, but love the pics of them used as light shades…Gayle

  37. Hello Renee and Angela,

  45. Forgot to tell you how I would use them…on my dining table. I have 4 silver-based ram horn candlebra, with silver tips. These skeps would be beautiful and in the same feeling as my candlesticks. Also I already have the beautiful chargers made of some kind of lacquered cane, round ones. Oh yes, they would be wonderful on my black lacquered tabletop. I’m already planning an event.

  57. Hello my friends! I go weak in the knees for bee skeps! There is something about them. Just sitting on a table, floor, bookshelf, stairs… anywhere, a bee skep is a gorgeous addition. And your’s are extraordinary.
I am usually not greedy or lustful over a giveaway, but I am so hoping I win this one. Sorry, I know that sounds very self centered! But really, these bee skeps would find such a loving home. My mom always had bee skeps in her garden, so they remind me of her and her wonderful decorating! I would, as I have often done w/ my mom’s ideas, switch it around and hang it from the ceiling! As a pendant light, of course.

  60. Deb Genua

I have only recently found you(via Cote de Texas I think) and adore your style! I check your site every evening now and just signed up to receive your emails.

I am a bee keeper and am passionate about all things bee’s (my name Debra means “the Bee, one who is industrious). I have, until this posting, only been familiar with American made skeps. The French skeps are enchanting. If I were lucky enough to win the skeps I would mount the pair on individual handmade wooden bases (2″ tall and 1″ larger then the base of the skep, run a light fixture post through them and turn them into table lamps. The lamp shades would be in scale to the skep and most likely be covered in a rustic faded toile that is in the same tones as the skeps themselves. I would edged the top and bottom of the shades with a little pop of lovely colored velvet ribbon, maybe pink or lime green for fun.

  61. NancyO.

New subscriber here…one of your bee skeps would be perfect sitting on an existing tree stump as a accent in my wildflower garden! What a find your blog is…love it.

  62. This is such a wonderful space, I’m thrilled to have found you via ‘greige’….am now a happy follower!

If I am the fortunate recipient of this amazing gift it would become a welcoming feature in my entrance as it is so unique and would no doubt make a fantastic conversation starter….my surname is Bezer!

Alternatively it would be lots of fun to create a light fixture as the light coming through the rustic elements of the weave would be soft and subtle.

    Happy day!

    xx F

I would put it in my garden and use it for staging for my upcoming photo shoot for Tuscan Style magazine! I’m your newest follower. Your blog is amazing! ~Delores

  82. Kari

I like the idea of having a skep on the front porch. A little vintage and rustic on a more modern porch can meld the two styles together. Thanks for this giveaway opportunity!

  83. Mary Gulley

I think beeskeep look best in the garden, among garden phlox & larkspur. They are a beautiful reminder of the garden when set in the house in wintertime.

  84. I LOVE these!!! I think I would first use it at a newborn prop in my photography business. I can see it laying on its side with a soft natural burlap material in it…just waiting for a newborn to fall asleep in it :)

    Hello,

I just found your blog through Greige. It’s really lovely! I think bee skeps work beautifully as pendants.

  95. Jane Weiss

Love the rustic French look of these bee skeps. Perfect for my little garden but equally great indoors in the off season. Love your site!

  96. Susan

I love them over the kitchen island…..we are building a new home full of rustic, livable items and textures….what a wonderful statement the skeps would make in our new kitchen….

  97. Lorna

Love to learn about new uses for old things. I would like one for my garden. I’ve been growing flowers to attract bees, more hummingbirds, and butterflies. It would be wonderful to add a woven structure so decorative yet functional. I’d hope for honey, but would be happy to just enjoy the simple beauty of the old design.

  98. Wow! Your blog is amazing! I am in love with the idea of using bee skeps over our kitchen island. The island is actually an old baker’s table with a stainless top. The rustic quality & texture would be a nice way to offset the industrial feel of the stainless steel top.

  99. Bridget

I just found your blog today. I have some really small skeps that were made to use as Christmas ornaments but I never knew the history of their design. I like them on a table mixed in with other items or used as a chandelier. I like the image with ine over the chair. I’m excited ton read your blog now that I’ve signed up!

  100. Peggy F

Heart be still . . . in any manner or manor, skeps are a “natural” choice and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea for lighting. Inspirational choice for a series of them in the kitchen (or the english pantry, or on each side of the bed) in the soon to be new house. FABULOUS! . . . heart be still.

  101. They are beautiful…very rustic..perfect chipmunk home…: )

  102. Karen Dyck

Thank you so much for this generous giveaway. I would use them in my great room, as a part of an arrangement on an antique cupboard I have.

  103. Funny my mother-in-law gave me one of these and I had no idea what it was but it’s pretty in a garden bed, just have to remember to bring it in during the winter. What I truly want to know about is your Spanish moss hanging from the trees, I see it in one of your images and it’s beautiful!

  104. Kathy Smith

I’m a new follower and can see that I’m going to enjoy reading your blog posts.
I love the bee skeps and would probably put one in my kitchen…it’s very rustic!

  105. Favorite application? The light fixtures. Definitely the light fixtures!

  106. Karen

A sunroom light fixture would be perfect.

  108. Cindy Vance

    Happy summer!

  109. Happy Friday ladies! What a fantastic giveaway. Depending on the size, I would likely set under a console table next to a stack of books or use as a cloche, atop my antique ‘margarine’ ironstone dairy slab.

    Thanks for the chance.
    Hugs~

  114. Jennifer

I have always loved bee skeps, and used one for years to cover the head of my well, which just happened to be in my front yard close to my front door! It lasted for 14 years, being taken inside during our terrible midwest winters. Last winter I forgot it, and it was destroyed during our blizzard!
I think I would use one of this pair on my screened porch as pendent lighting, and the other to cover my well head!
    Love your blog!

  115. Molly

Love your blog! So much inspiration…new follower via Greige. Would love the bee skips to use as lighting. Love the idea! Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

  116. Jacqueline Burns-Walters

    Hello!
Being a California beekeeper for over 15 years, I of course love anything to do with honeybees. I would hang the bee skep as a light pendant in the middle of my gazebo which is by the fountain where our honeybees come to get a drink of water.
Thanks for the chance to win your fabulous givaway. I’m excited to have found your blog!
    Bon Chance!

  119. There are so many wonderful uses for these, but I’m really loving them as a pendant.

  120. SBernards

I am happy to learn what skeps are called. I’ve always liked them but never knew. I would have to rotate mine from the garden to the inside depending on the season and where I’m spending my time.

  121. AnneHH

Love these beeskeps–they are so rustic with beautiful proportions. I have loved beeskeps for my whole life. To me they have wonderful texture and color that enhance both indoor and outdoor spaces. I am definitely happiest when I am in my garden and I would love having them to enjoy while I am there and to remind me of the garden as part of my indoor decorating. I would definitely include them on my large console table where I display things I love–a birds’ nest, rustic candle sticks, and a smooth river stone I found in the shape of a heart.

I am in process of remodeling the house as you already know, Renee. I’ve painted and rearranged and am desperate for unique lighting. These bee skeps would be a great attribute to the eclectic nature my home is taking. Hope I win! Remy

I am a new follower and I have to say—I love them anywhere–in the garden, in the house as part of decor, LOVE them as light fixtures, just love Bee Skeps…

  124. In my courtyard next to the lavender, as a chandelier in my entrance window, or to hide my winter knitting, gosh, I may need several of the wonderful bee skeps. I love the rustic feel they bring to an area.

  125. I’m already a follower! My logo is a bee so I often use bee skeps as display props for my jewelry or knitwear. I’ve added yours to my wish list! They’re beautiful!!

The bee skeps make a lovely accessory for the interior. I like to put battery operated tealights inside one for a nice illumination.

  127. Beautiful objects! I would certainly use them in my garden. Love the first image!
I created a link to your post and give away on my post, Friday 6th August and hope that some of your followers came via my blog.

Have a wonderful weekend and many thanks for your – always – lovely comments.
    Greetings,
    Karin

  128. New to your blog and just loving it! I love them in all the photos but would use it in my garden. Thanks for a great give away!

Dear Ladies…Once upon a time (15 years ago) I lived in Savannah, Georgia. That is the last time I had a bee skep. I left it in the garden for the new owners. A very large, ginormous toad had taken up residence in it and he could not be uprooted to Chicago, much too cold for such a southern gentleman. If I were the lucky winner of the bee skeps (very generous, by the way) I would be very selfish and keep them indoors. Your post is heavenly and your store LaCaze offers beautiful items. I am signing up for your blog right after this comment is posted. Thank you for the images……Susan

It will look so great with a light under….beside my new pool ! It will suit perfectly in my english garden !

  131. I absolutely agree that the form of the bee skep looks great anywhere! the natural material and the hand-made quality add so much to the garden or interior as contrast. I have loved them forever, even when I did not know what they were!lol I am a new follower and I found my way here from greige….as I am living in New Hampshire, I love seeing and vicariously enjoying your outdoor lifestyles in LA or CA!! Beautiful!!

  132. I have wanted a bee skep for a while now…it will be a lovely addition to my large coffee table or studio worktable(my husband is building this for me, with a zinc top)!

  133. I am a follower!

  134. I love they way the look in the garden. This would be a great addition to my little French inspired herb garden.

  135. I am your most recent follower. We have mutual friends and I have seen your name in comments. I am looking forward to knowing your blog.

I love all of your ideas.

  137. Susan St. Amour

Love them as rustic sculpture, as in the one paired with the St. Francis, and as pendant lights.

  138. Hi!
I found your blog through Karin at La Pouyette!

The Bee Skeps are wonderful. I think I would have to see them first, unpack them and let them speak to me. I can think of several ways I would use them…and knowing me, I would move them around! I can see them sitting in front of my fireplace or decorating my front porch between two rocking chairs, or setting on top of my china cabinet, which is in my living room with ginger jars right now, or even in the center of my dining room table! Wouldn’t that be awesome!

    Beautiful blog!
    Blessings,
    Martha Passman

Great giveaway. New subscriber found you via French Essence. After being unemployed for almost a year, we are finally getting back on track and will be celebrating our 1st year anniversary late…these would make a great gift as my wife loves all things French and now has me hooked! Thanks again for the opportunity!

  140. Denise

LOVE these skeps…hope I win. I hope you have saved the best for last and I win!
    Love your blog ladies,
    Denise

  141. just became a follower! I love beeskeps! I’ve been collecting them for years. I always have 1 or 2 in my garden. And I have several antique ones on top of a cupboard in my dining room. I use them to dcorate during the holidays. In fact I just purchased a silver one.

  142. Renee A

I found your site through a greige recommendation – it’s truly beautiful!
If I was to win the giveaway, what a perfect compliment it would make to my new home’s concrete counters. I’ve been searching for items to soften the few long, hard spans – a bee skep it should be!
Thank you for the inspiring photos.

  143. Hello Angela and Renee! I just found your blog and love it! I posted a picture Monday of skeps in a garden. It is one of my favorite pictures.

  144. I am a new follower and will add your giveaway to my blog’s sidebar.

  145. Before we downsized, I had two herb knots that mirrored each other, circled by boxwood, and at the center I had bee skeps. I looked down at them from my bedroom window and the skeps always made me smile. I can still see the shape of my boxwood circles on Google Earth (now looking down from a satellite!), but the skeps are gone. I did not even know where I could find another! Love your blog!

  146. Pam W

Love the bee skeps, (and your site). For now, I think I would use one in my fireplace with lots of plants, etc. for a beautiful focal point. But, so many possibilities come to mind…thank you so much for the opportunity to win! Definitely becoming a follower…..

Beautiful site! The smaller Bee Skep would make/be (pun intended)the perfect light for my little foyer. I’ve been looking forever & this is the casual, European look I so love!

  148. I love your photos, I think you covered every way possible to use them. I have loved skeps for as long as following the gardens in Williamsburg and my trips to Europe seeing them scattered in gardens. I need a new one, it seems like when I find one my intention is only to use it inside for decorating and table arrangements. But it isn’t long before my herb garden starts calling for it. I usually prop mine on bricks to lengthen their life a little longer. I just love seeing one in my garden. I also love them near my potting shed mixed in with my cloches. Oh what the heck, I love them. Going to follow. Kathy

  149. I’ve never heard of a Bee Skep, but love them! The hanging pendant application is a lot of fun, or just sitting on a table, like a cloche. Thanks for teaching me about something new!

  150. Glad I got back just in time to be a part of this. :) I love the look of them as part of a vignette!

  151. Hi Angela and Renee

I have been a follower of your blog almost from the start and I love to visit you and get inspired.
I’m also glad I got back from my vacation in time to be a part of your give away. The Bee Skeps are wonderful and have a lovely texture. I love them as lamps and they looks great on the table along with the monk.
I also believe they will be great on a big raw table set with a slightly rough service. They could for example hide a appetizer ore a surprise on the plates to each guest.
I’ve never seen them in Norway, but my Danish friend who lives in France, told me about them. It would be great happiness for me to have them in my home!
    Have a nice day!
    xx
    Lene

These are gorgeous! I can imagine them as pendant lights under a covered patio, as lamp shades or simply as accent pieces. I’m a huge fan of your blog and am most definitely inspired by your site!!
